Wikipad Android Gaming Tablet Respawns With New Size, Lower Price Tag
Things were going well for Los Angeles-based Wikipad, Inc. until late 2012. The creators of the Wikipad gaming tablet had distribution agreements with major retailers like Best Buy, Amazon.com, and Gamestop. The unique piece of hardware was garnering positive press from IGN, GT.TV and other gaming enthusiast sites. The company ultimately missed their target launch date of October 2012, and as CES 2013 approached things fell worryingly silent. Fortunately, that all changes today as the Wikipad respawns with a smaller form factor and a reduced price to match.
So what happened? A flaw was discovered in the initial production run. The company assures me the flaw wasn’t caused by the designers or manufacturing partners, though no further details were given.
Wikipad, Inc turned the discovery into a victory. During the delay they decided to make improvements to the controller, and welcomed feedback from the community. The common thread in the feedback loop? The 10″ Wikipad was a premium tablet justifying its $499 asking price, but that cost was feared to be too steep for an unestablished brand. The company wisely listened to its supporters and retail partners, and Wikipad’s designers scaled the gaming tablet down to 7″ while retaining the specs of the original.
